Let’s go back to more characters in our magical world and see what songs may apply to their characterizations and personalities. I hope you liked my thoughts, dreams, and visions of Lord Voldemort; and through more hard work, I can equal the efforts I made there, elsewhere. Let me start the next round with a character that I found not only to be most interesting, but also, to me, the most chilling person I have ever read in the series. He did not stay around for long and his presence was just a few fleeting moments. However, the impact he made was most devastating to the entire series (or, at least, arguably so). His revelation at a key moment was also a big surprise or plot twist . . . however, that revelation was not as wild as the revelations at the end of PoA in which we, as the readers, kept getting blasted with more and more information in each paragraph and wind up saying, “Wow!” a lot. No, this revelation was more spine-tingling and made us, including myself, say, “Oh God . . . Dear Lord, no!” He was a most deadly figure that accomplished everything he set out to do, and, because of what he did, he is the only character thus far that we know to have been executed by the Ministry of Magic. Here are a few of his lines to remind you of this man:
“I told you Harry . . . I told you. If there’s one thing I hate more than any other, it’s a Death Eater who walked free. They turned their back on my Master when he needed them most . . . Tell me he told them that I, I alone, remained faithful . . . preparing to risk everything to deliver him the one thing he wanted above all . . . you.”
“Imagine how he will reward me when he finds I have done it for him. I gave you to him – the thing he needed above all to regenerate – and then I killed you for him. I will be honored beyond all other Death Eaters. I will be his dearest, his closest supporter . . . closer than a son . . .”
And who is this man with such chilling, vengeful, and malevolent words? He is the Most Loyal and Faithful Servant of the Dark Lord . . .
Barty Crouch Junior
One of the things that most intrigued me about Crouch Junior was trying to respond to a question that was never fully answered in GoF: How did he get that way? How did he turn from a quiet son into (at least after the trial was finished) a calculated Death Eater and murderer? And why did he turn himself in such way? These questions continue to make me wonder, and it is only through guesses and illustrations through poetry and song that we might gain a little insight. We know the relation between him and his father was strained for quite some time. We know that Crouch Senior was very stern and had no mercy for anyone even remotely connected to Voldemort and his cause. We know, that, as odd as it may have sounded, Crouch Junior was spared by his mother (with some approval from his father) from Azkaban, and Crouch Senior decided to “imprison” his son in Crouch Junior’s own mind. But we are still not sure where all of this hatred between father and son fully began. Did Crouch Senior abuse his son previously? Did he care more for his career and more for punishing wrongdoers than for his own family (both wife AND son)? Did he take something away from his son at some point early in his life (like a pet, a favorite book, a favorite friend) that placed the seed of resentment inside of his son and that seed would only grow and rear its ugly head at a climax such as what happened in the book? You see? I have more questions than answers, which, in turn, make this character even more intriguing. Here is one song that might explain a little of what happened to Crouch Junior during his teenage years, from Meat Loaf. There are three separate events portrayed in this song, the first being a possibility of tragedy, the second being the clear parallel to the story, and the third being a possible problem to Crouch Junior for later on in life -- he cannot relate or love another (because he was never nurtured for it by his parents, obviously more his father than his mother). See what you make of it in respects to understand the True Servant:
Meat Loaf – Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are
The skies were pure and the fields were green
And the sun was brighter than it's ever been
When I grew up with my best friend Kenny
We were close as any brothers than you ever knew
It was always summer and the future called
We were ready for adventures and we wanted them all
And there was so much left to dream
And so much time to make it real
But I can still recall the sting of all
The tears when he was gone
They said he crashed and burned
I know I'll never learn
Why any boy should die so young
We were racing, we were soldiers of fortune
We got in trouble but we sure got around
There are times I think I see him peeling out of the dark
I think he's right behind me now and he's gaining ground
But it was long ago and it was far away,
Oh God it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway,
Then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And when the sun descended and the night arose
I heard my father cursing everyone he knows
He was dangerous and drunk and defeated
And corroded by failure and envy and hate
There were endless winters and the dreams would freeze
Nowhere to hide and no leaves on the trees
And my father's eyes were blank
As he hit me again and again and again
I know I still believe he'd never let me leave,
I had to run away alone
So many threats and fears, so many wasted years
Before my life became my own
And though the nightmares should be over
Some of the terrors are still intact
I'll hear that ugly coarse and violent voice
And then he grabs me from behind
And then he pulls me back
But it was long ago and it was far away,
Oh God it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway,
Then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
There was a beauty living on the edge of town
And she always put the top up and the hammer down
And she taught me everything I'll ever know
About the mystery and the muscle of love
The stars would glimmer and the moon would glow
I'm in the back seat with my Julie like a Romeo
And the signs along the highway all said,
Caution! Kids At Play!
Those were the rights of spring and we did everything
There was salvation every night
We got our dreams reborn and our upholstery torn
But everything we tried was right
She used her body just like a bandage,
She used my body just like a wound
I'll probably never know where she disappeared
But I can see her rising up out of the back seat now
Just like an angel rising up from a tomb
But it was long ago and it was far away,
Oh God it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway,
Then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror
May appear closer than they are
She used her body just like a bandage,
She used my body just like a wound
I'll probably never know where she disappeared
But I can see her rising up out of the back seat now
The second song I provide gives quite the poignant moment in the book that Crouch Junior illustrates as the parallel between himself and the Dark Lord. Both went through an often repeated line in this song: “Daddy gave me a name . . . and then he walked away . . . my dad gave me a name.” And, I think the song portrays the same loathing, the same barbed questions that Crouch Junior seemed to ask (or, at least, is etched on his pained face) as he is pulled out of the courtroom, away from his father -- "Tell me, where have you been?". The song also reminds me of the sharp melancholy of Hamlet when he confronts his mother that I think is equally portrayed in Crouch Junior as he looks at his father from his early days and then looks at his father now in the same way that Hamlet looks at his dead father and then at his uncle that has taken his father’s place. I think this song is an even better example of Crouch Junior’s confusion that set in at first but then transformed into anger and hatred.
Everclear – Father of Mine
father of mine
tell me where have you been
you know i just closed by eyes
my whole world disappeared
father of mine
take me back to the day
when i was still your golden boy
back before you went away
i remember blue skies
walking the block
i loved it when you held me high
i loved to hear you talk
you would take me to the movie
you would take me to the beach
you would take me to a place inside
that's so hard to reach
father of mine
tell me where did you go
you had the whole world inside your hand
but you did not seem to know
father of mine
tell me what do you see
when you look back at your wasted life
and you don't see me
i was ten years old
doing all that i could
it wasn't easy for me
to be a scared white boy
in a black neighborhood
sometimes you would send me a birthday card
with a five dollar bill
i never understood you then
and i guess i never will
daddy gave me a name
my dad gave me a name
then he walked away
daddy gave me a name
then he walked away
my dad he gave me a name
father of mine
tell me where have you been
i just closed by eyes
and the world disappeared
father of mine
tell me how do you sleep
with the children you abandoned
and the wife i saw you beat
i will never be safe
i will never be sane
i will always be weird inside
i will always be lame
now i'm a grown man
with a child of my own
and i swear I'll never let her know
all the pain i have known
then he walked away
daddy gave me a name
then he walked away
my dad he gave me a name
then he walked away
daddy gave me a name
then he walked away
my dad he gave me a name
then he walked away
Ahhh, now here is a legendary song from a legendary group, Pearl Jam. In fact, even the video to this song was legendary, not the least of which was because this was the last video this group ever made. This one gave me a very clear and immediate picture of Crouch Junior and the way, as it can be said, he finally “snapped”. And, to me, Crouch Junior “snapped” very violently and very permanently. That is, particularly when he was convicted by his father and furthermore, when he was forced into the Imperius Curse, I believe (though, again, under the surface, these thoughts and feelings that brought about this change had been boiling underneath the surface for quite some time) he “passed the point of no return” in a “no retreat, no surrender” like fashion and could never go back to the “way things were before”. The real chilling vision that I have in this moment is to see Crouch Senior trying to whip the Imperius Curse again and again upon his son. However, Senior recognizes that something is starting to go wrong with what normally happens, because instead of seeing his son laid out in pain and in control on the floor, he sees that slowly but surely, Crouch Junior is no longer obeying the curse’s commands and is hauntingly rising to his feet. The look of horror is struck all throughout the gaze of Crouch Senior as Crouch Junior looks out from underneath his messed-up straw hair that had fallen into his eyes and says with a determined mixture of wrath and perverted joy/relief in deadly tones, readying his own wand, “No . . . . more . . . . “ Just think on that as one might listen to . . . “Ooh, but we unleashed a lion,” and you will see what I mean.
Pearl Jam – Jeremy
At home, drawing pictures of mountain tops with him on top
Lemon yellow sun, arms raised in a V
And the dead lay in pools of maroon below
Daddy didn't give attention
Oh, to the fact that mommy didn't care
King Jeremy the wicked...oh, ruled his world...
Jeremy spoke in class today... (2x)
Clearly I remember pickin' on the boy
Seemed a harmless little f***
Ooh, but we unleashed a lion...
Gnashed his teeth and bit the recess lady's breast...
How can I forget?
And he hit me with a surprise left
My jaw left hurtin'...ooh, dropped wide open
Just like the day...oh, like the day I heard
Daddy didn't give affection, no...
And the boy was something that mommy wouldn't wear
King Jeremy the wicked...oh, ruled his world
Jeremy spoke in class today... (3x)
Woo... (14x)
Try to forget this...try to forget this...
Try to erase this...try to erase this...
From the blackboard...
Jeremy spoke in class today... (2x)
Jeremy spoke in, spoke in... (2x)
Jeremy spoke in class today...
Woo... (29x)
Woooooohhh...spoke in, spoke in...
Woooooohhh...uh huh, uh huh...
The last song is one that I think is the perfect song for Crouch Junior. Every word, every line is his and his alone, as it most clearly and poignantly demonstrates the life he led. I believe, at the end, Crouch Junior knows exactly well what he did to the Longbottoms, what he did to his father, what he did for his Master, and what he implicitly did to Harry. And even when he knows he is to be executed, he remains impenitent. Even though his life has been a mess for a long time, Crouch Junior IS that man portrayed in this song. This song is also a quintessential tune for the band that wrote it, in which, much like Pearl Jam’s
Jeremy, it became one of their “signature” songs. Crouch Junior, to me, is . . . The Unforgiven.
Metallica – UnforgivenNew blood joins this earth
and quickly he's subdued
through constant pain disgrace
the young boy learns their rules
with time the child draws in
this whipping boy done wrong
deprived of all his thoughts
the young man struggles on and on he's known
a vow unto his own
that never from this day
his will they'll take away
what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been
what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub the unforgiven
they dedicate their lives
to running all of his
he tries to please them all
this bitter man he is
throughout his life the same
he's battled constantly
this fight he cannot win
a tired man they see no longer cares
the old man then prepares
to die regretfully
that old man here is me
what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been
what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub the unforgiven
you labeled me
I'll label you
so I dub the unforgiven
I hope all of those songs might help bring a more interesting portrait of Crouch Junior. Although we do not know what might have been the catalyst that began his transformation in closing one door and opening another, we can clearly see the aftermath of that choice. The one last little thing to mention is about the time of all of these songs. Ironically, all four of these songs came out around the same year as the others (1991), and all point (or are representative, thereof) to the period of music that was filled with such angst, resentment, depression, and even revolution toward the rest of the world around them. Who knew that songs like these could crystallize the personality of a blood-freezing character in the Potter magical world, eh? <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START : --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->
