What a wonderful fic! I loved the scene you chose and I think you did it justice. I really liked your Dumbledore and I enjoyed the flashback with young Sirius and the consequences of the prank. Well done!

What you've done is really great - I like the use of the flashback - it's very effective and I found it extremely interesting, I can imagine the scene playing out just as you wrote. I also love the way you've portrayed both Sirius and Dumbledore - I think they're very true to character. You've written it beautifully, and I really enjoyed reading!

I did write it very quickly, Dragon. It was terribly depressing to ponder, so I had to get it exorcise it from my system and move on. I feel awful for Sirius--though he escapes The Kiss, things do not exactly become roses and sunshine for him after this scene. May he rest in peace!

Ooh, Wings, I absolutely love your fic! Ever since the first time I read POA I have wondered exactly what Sirius told Dumbledore to persuade him of his innocence that night. Your take on it sounds just right! I was impressed by the memory of the prank, because Sirius' thoughts seem to be dead on. It was also brilliant to see Sirius not treating Dumbledore like he was perfect -- the fact that wizards and witches always seemed to accept and revere Dumbledore as though he was almost something more than a man always annoyed me.

This line was very powerful:

Quote::

His voice cracked as he finished, “Twelve years I was tortured! For nothing. And now, I have no hope. An eternity of soulessness; do you even know what that means? Does any human know what that means?”

That truly made my heart sore for poor Sirius.

Oooh Wings, I loooved your fic! There is a wonderful (historian's) knack for detail in your story, especially the description of Sirius' wasted appearance in contrast to what he used to be.

I also liked the way you made Sirius feel disappointed with Dumbledore's single-mindedness early, questioning the sacrifices that had to be made to defeat Voldemort:

Quote::

Sirius came to learn in future encounters with Dumbledore that the man’s one goal, conquering Voldemort, would be executed at the expense of everything, everyone. Did saving the world entail tearing it apart?

The last sentence of this quote is extremely powerful.

Also, you touched on something I've never even thought about:

Quote::

“Without a soul, I’ll never be able to beg James’ and Lily’s forgiveness."

This indeed could have been one of Sirius' greatest fears.

Will there be a fiction challenge like this again this year? If so, I'd like to participate, but I'd need to know about it by early July. (My work takes me away from computer access for four weeks around August.)

If it's a writing contest, I hope it will be announced in time for me to participate.

The contests are usually announced at the beginning of August and you have until near the end of August to create an entry.

... I suppose if you needed more time and know the contest is coming, you could start earlier than that.

Any word about the annual contest yet?
I will go away from all computer access on 7/24. perhaps not to return until late August (26 -27?). In another week or so, I will lose my mind trying to get everything settled to be away that long, so I hope if there is one, it will get started soon!
