Well, based on various topics around this board, quite a few of us are big theatre fans, so I figured why not give theatre a topic of its own? So here goes...discuss whatever theatre related things you desire. What are your favorite shows, songs, actors, actresses, etc.? Are you a performer yourself? Go for it...
I'll start by telling you about a great show I just saw on Broadway called "Big River." It's a musical with deaf, partially deaf, and hearing actors. Sounds impossible, but it was really amazing. Hearing actors and deaf actors both signed, and hearing actors also sang and spoke for the deaf actors. Huck, for instance is deaf, so he signs the dialogue and songs while the actor who plays Mark Twain is Huck's voice. Jim, on the other hand, is not deaf, but he signs everything he speaks and sings. It was so amazing. It closes soon, but see it if you have the chance, especially if you are looking for something a little different.

Hurrah! Theatre topic on a Sirius board, what could be better?
Siri and I were involved with theatre in our school for a while, oh it was fun... but unprofessional, so I'll bring up some Broadway stuff.
I'd really like to go to New York and Broadway and stuff... but I'm stuck in the south. Good news is, there have been some good shows here. A favorite of mine is Les Miserables. Sooo sad, but beautiful. There was some really showy stage effects too, it was awesome. There was a big revolving platform in the stage, so the townspeople (or something) were walking around on it, so it appeared that they were walking down the street but every few seconds the song would go to another person, so the revolving thingy put them up front to sing. Also, there was this huge set piece, actually it was two put together, and all these people were on it... I don't remember exactly. Nevermind. But yes, wonderful show, I recommend it highly.

Bwuhaha, and I was in charge of you then too! Jane and I did theatre together for a year for school, and those were some good times. Both of us where behind the scenes, but had a ton of fun. And we got headsets! I loved it so much I never went back... didn't want to ruin my memories.
To Jane: Ah, the doorbell! Scene 15! 'Does it walk?' Pig rines and Stevie galore...
Ah, good times.

I'm into musical theater -- haven't gotten to see many plays ever.
The only show I've actually ever seen on Broadway was Miss Saigon when I was in high school. It was pretty good -- the whole landing a helicopter on stage was impressive. It was ironic though -- I was on a school trip and everyone wanted to see RENT, but the school wouldn't go for it since it had too many adult themes. So instead, we saw a show where 90% of it deals with prostitution.
I love Cats -- saw it when I lived in DC. My musical theater prof was in the London production of it (can't remember what part he played at the moment though).
My all time fave though has got to be RENT. I've seen it 3 of the 4 times it came to north Texas. I had second row seats at one show -- it was really amazing. I would've given anything to have seen the original cast perform, but no such luck.
I'd reccomend any of the 3 shows, but Cats was recently retired.

I love the theater, both going to it and acting in it. Back in the good 'ol days, I used to do children's theater. It was a by children/for children sort of deal. But then I hit 18, and I haven't done all that much since. A really crappy play in University, but we're not going to mention that.<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :worry --><img src=http://pages.prodigy.net/siriusblack/boards/smilies/iiworry.gif ALT=":worry]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->
I've seen tons of great plays, though. I'm not really into musicals, but I loved Miss Saigon, and I saw Cats and Phantom of the Opera. *shrug* I didn't find them terribly impressive. I saw a stage production of Rosencranz and Guildenstern are Dead that was to die for, and had the luck of being able to see MacBeth in Stratford. (Canada, not England...) Come to think of it, I should get out more. I haven't seen a play in waaaay too long.

Hmm... the last thing I saw in the theatre was The Rocky Horror Show 30th Anniversary Tour, and I think I'm going to see Grease in about a week. I've seen it before, in London - I've also seen Saturday Night Fever, Chicago and Rent there. Chicago was my favourite (LOVED it), but my absolute fave is Rocky. I've been in it, y'see. I was a Transylvanian, and my best friend was Frank-N-Furter. Good times. :DD
I'd like to get more involved in the theatre around here - I've not done much (OK, anything really) before, but you have to start somewhere, eh?

I'm totally in love with Cats, it's my favorite show, I managed to catch it in London before it closed. It muchly rocked!
I'm over joyed to say that I'm currently set to star in a local production of the musical 'Bugsy Malone'. For anyone who's seen it I'm playing Blousey Brown this November. I'm just over joyed. I only got my letter yesterday and I don't know too much about the part. Can anyone tell me anything?

*Nods around to the people on this thread*
Yes, I have seen, in one way or another, a little music theatre myself in my own time. Many of the productions, I would say, are usually either very good or dreadfully awful. There never seems to be a happy medium for music theatre for me. Either everything is done quite well with a great deal of care and quality or it is something (which may included personal preferences, too) that make you want to get up and leave. So, with that in mind, let me echo some of my own choices or non-choices, thereof.
In the dreadful category, or at least in the category of never want to see again, I would probably say, Oklahoma. "Oklahoma and a fine bing cherry" just makes me want to vomit. In fact, most westerns, including the Will Rogers tribute just don't belong on a live stage, in my opinion. Westerns are not bad as movies, but live stage is a whole other ball of yarn.
I eventually want to see West Side Story in my life. Just haven't gotten around to it. I have always heard great things about it. I have seen some off-Broadway stuff, too, that was not too bad. There was one doing some sort of Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn thing I saw that wasn't bad at all. Now, I suppose, into the favorites.
One that has to be up there is, indeed, Cats. I can't remember if I saw this at the Kennedy Center in Washington or on Broadway itself. I can remember the plush seating, the great lighting, and myself, as a young boy, having to get all dressed up to go and see it. I can also remember seeing so many other kids and their parents with the little orange T. S. Eliot book following along with the show. It was a marvelous thing to behold. And, in a little laughing moment, I finally figured out where the song, "Memory", came from. Let me see, the Cats that I really liked were . . . Old Deuteronomy, Mr. Mistoffelees, and perhaps Macavity, the Mystery Cat. Anybody who understands me even a little could see why I would like those three.
Phantom of the Opera. Another good one, but I would have to agree with Aoife on two counts. If the right cast (such as the original, perhaps) is in place, this piece is hauntingly great. If it is not, particularly in the role of the Phantom, it can be like nails on the chalkboard. The other thing I will agree with Aoife on, if she will recall, is the words of tiny Owen Meany in regards to the Phantom. That is, there has to be "A PRESENCE!" in him. If he is just going through the motions or simply not up to snuff, it crashes the whole thing. Just remember to keep your hand to the level of your eyes and you will be fine.
Lastly, one that I have seen on stage and also saw on a command performance celebrating its history on PBS, is one that I have honestly marveled at for years. This tale always seems to bring down the house, and like Cats or the Rocky Horror Picture Show, does require a little fun with, shall I say, "Audience Participation Night". And the musical? Les Miserables. Simply known as Les Mis by those who have seen it. Great test of wills between Valjean and Javert. Many things stick out in this musical for me. Red and Black, leading into Do You Hear the People Sing is wonderful:
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
If you have the right Valjean in place, Bring Him Home never leaves a dry eye in the house. That, and On My Own by Eponine. Actually, On My Own could even be a Sirius dedication for all the ladies out there. At any rate, there is one more that I really liked and brings out everyone, particularly the audience ourselves to our feet for a good laugh. Yes, it is the wonderfully crooked Thenardier and Master of the House. Surely you might remember something like. . .
Enter M'Sieur
Sit yourself down
And meet the best
Inkeeper in town.
As for the rest
All of them crooks
Rooking the guests
And cooking the books.
Seldom do you see
Honest men like me
A gent of good intent
Who's content to be.
And when Madame Thernardier gets up for her drunken rebuttle, well, let's just say it's not only bawdy, but you laugh your butt off. Oh well. Just a few choices from the Old Auror you might be interested in.

Hey guys! Great topic!
I'm only 14 and I live in Israel,
but I'm a huge musical theater fan.
I love SOOOOOOOOOO many shows.
My favorite thing in the world is performing,
and that is my dream. I've been in quite
a few great productions here. Now, I go to
a music high school, so I'm working on it!

I'd have to say the Phantom of the Opera. Why? Because I played the Phantom in our high school play, which was pretty fun. It was hard to memorize all the lines and such, but on the upside I didn't have to sing. I just lip-synched the songs to a professional singer because when I sing I sound like a dying cat. x_x I got to keep one of my costumes too, though I would of liked both. I got to keep the main one, but I had to give back my "Red Death" costume for some reason.
Some other plays and musicals I like include Cats, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Rent, West Side Story, The picture of Dorien Gray (is that what it's called?) and The Scarlet Pimpernel. I might be forgetting some, but that's okay. I pretty much enjoy everything I go to see. :DD

Can you guess which musical this is from? I might have the wording wrong, but if you've seen it you'll get it.
(Sung like harpies outside a window at four in the morning)
We love you Conrad
Oh yes we do
We love you Conrad
And we'll be true
When you're not near us
We're blue
Oh Conrad we love youIf you want another clue, ask and I'll give it.

Here's another musical that's worth mentioning: 'Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street'. I had the luck of being able to see it here in Michigan a couple of years back. Tom Wopat, uh, the guy from 'The Dukes of Hazard' played the lead role. It was fantastic, and very funny.

Hehe, I saw a horrible version of Bye Bye Birdieand I still liked it. The stage fighting was really bad (when whatshisface decks conrad). He missed by like a visible foot and I was near the back.
