Will the D.A. continue?
This forum was originally created to house all OotP spoilers. Now that we have given enough time for everyone to read it, you can bring it up all over the boards - but the main discussion will remain here.

My personal speculation on this subject solely relies on the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Is the new teacher competent and well informed? Is there a need for the group to continue if they have a good teacher, and do they still want to continue the club even if they have a teacher that's worthy of the position? I think they might hold another meeting at the beginning of the year, but will their group be forgotten, and thought of as permanently disbanded, or will they remember that Umbridge is gone and the educational decrees gone with her. I personally think that the group will meet up again, but some members might decide to discontinue their membership. Another thought is if they get a new teacher, what if the teacher is killed later in the book and is replaced by someone that isn't giving them the proper instruction that they want so they decide to continue their lessons with the D.A.? I can only hope that JK doesn't leave the D.A. alone and send it to the graveyard. MSL- R.S.

I think it will be dormant for a while with some sort of excitement starting at the beginning of the sixth year. I think perhaps this time they will have a decent DADA teacher - not sure whom, but I'm betting on a new character. Or Dumbledore - yeah, I think he might actually teach something eventually.
It'l be necessary for them because who is going to teach them how to fight? Only Harry seems to be up to that challenge and it's good practice for him. I think it'll pop back up towards the latter half of sixth year.

I imagine it will partialy be influenced by the legitity and competence of the new DADA, but i think it will return, however the numbers may decrease or rapidly increase. i figure that since the news of voldermorts return will be validated, more students will take the threat wholly diffrent, and if the DADA is another incompentent boob. then the numberse will increase drimaticly. also to complement a previous statment, to the effect of they get to do things they may not get to do in the normal DADA, i agree, because its a private outlet they will learn things that the normal instructors or mom, might not be comfortable teaching, this might lead to trouble insted of defence some may condisder the dark arts and switch over.
Sirius will return, in him there is a fire which even death cannot extinguish.

I also think that the DA will return, but not immediately. The rapidity of it's return will be directly influenced by the competency of the new DADA teacher. The better he is, the longer it will take for the DA to re-group. It's also likely that it won't return in the same form as it should no longer be necessary for them to hide what they are doing. Therefore, it might return as more of a club and maybe with a different, less provocative name.

I imagine it largely just depends on who the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is. The DA was only formed originally because Umbridge was so hugely incompetent, and a group of students recognized that Defense was important to learn and set out to do it despite her class. If they have a reasonable Defense teacher with half a knack for the job next year, there's probably no reason for the DA to reband.

I also think that it'll continue as some club or maybe even as a group study.
But I don't think that a new DADA teacher would have much of an effect. Like Harry says, they haven't taught much about how to emotionally deal with the fact that when fighting dark wizards you could die in the next second or so. I think people really need to learn that from Harry, & the fact that he's a kid will probably make it easier for others to admit their fears in front of him (remember Lavender says that it'd too scary to practice the Patronus Charm even with a Boggart-Dementor), as opposed to a grown-up. When you are dealing with a grown-up, you want to act like one to be taken seriously.
And if the DA continues, other students have the choice whether they want to take DADA that seriously or not. I'm sure that some feel that DADA classes, under a competent teacher or not, are more than enough as they are not sure if they want to join the fight against Voldemort. Having a separate club from the classes allows them that choice.

Well it couldn't be a completely secret class because Dumbledore knows about it now. Though I don't think that Dumbledore would stop Harry from sharing what he's learnt with others - he seems to believe very much that everyone at Hogwarts should be prepared for what is coming.
I'd like to think it will continue, even if it's only as a study group. It was a perfect example of people from different houses coming together under a common goal, to learn how to fight the Dark Arts, and I'd hate to see that all go just because the DADA teacher is a bit better this year.

I don't think so. Now there will be another DADA teacher and hopefully better. If not, then I'm am certain it will continue.

Once again, weatherwaxing has a good point.
So does Got2xlr8, about the flux of new students.
Okay, so what if we do get a good DADA instructor whom the students can trust? Hmmm. May be no need for Harry's DA. BUT if Snape finally gets the job....well, there will still be a need for the meetings, and secrecy. I think Dumbledore would keep it from Snape.
If you knew then what you know now, would you do it all over again?

Not is they have a proper DADA teacher.
I mean, it will no more exist as it was in OotP, but surely they will continue meeting, maybe for practice, for homework os something like that, or maybe as a real Dumbledore's Army (I mean, since the second war againd Voldemort has started, Dumbledore himself will teach them some good magic against the Dark Arts).
I think that, above all the ones who went to the department of mysteries with Harry have understood the importance of fighting Voldemort and will continue exercising as hard as the can! (Neville, in particular!)

I think that the D.A. will continue no matter who the new DADA teacher is. I think that for the most part all of the members from OotP will stay, but I think that there will be some new members as well. Seeing as everyone now knows that Voldemort is back, people will be more willing to join if it is made more public and everything, because they also won't think that Harry is some rotten kid who is just trying to get attention by causing trouble.

I also think that the DA will continue, because Harry teaches the others spells and other defenses that most of them either have never been taught before or else haven't been able to perform properly. For example, Harry teaches the class how to produce a Patronus, which as Hermione states in the third book, 'is very advanced magic' and therefore would not be taught by a teacher in a students' early years. Also, Dumbledore would realise that the DA is a good way not only for kids to prepare for what is coming, but for the kids to unite, as the sorting hat suggested in the fifth book.

if it continues, it most likely wouldn't be still called "The D.A." anymore, since that was just the impromptu title they gave it to signify their rebellion against the Ministry. i could see it morphing into a Dueling Club again, or even just a general DADA Study Group.
we know the MoM won't try to mess with Hogwarts anymore, and so they should have a good teacher for the new opening. i do agree that Dumbledore would make an excellent teacher for it, but it's probably unlikely that he would take it. personally, i think if they could persuade Tonks to come and teach it, it would fit very well...since she would naturally be able to connect with the students better. we already know she has skill, or she would have never made it to being an Auror. but knowing how things are, i think JK likes to bring in a new person each time for the job...which keeps things fresh, and adds a new dimension to the learning process for them.
