Well, she's not on the book... Like Ms T Norris said, their story is in Appendix... So I wasn't even expecting to see her there...

In the appendix, which is at the back of the third book it talks about her plenty, but not to worry she will be in the third book even if she doesn't have a major role. She is what attracts a large part of the male audience. Sad isn't?

Yes well if you were Liv Tyler would you want a total of three lines? I'm just kidding but I doubt they will make anything up they might just move a bit of the stuff around in time to make it fit in the movie. They already did that with the second one. Stupid director left out Shelob. I know the movie was already really long but still I was looking forward to that freaking spider! O well the third movie will be out soon and I will get to see her! The trailer for the return of the king is excellent you get to glimpse the wicked Shelob!

huh?? I didn't notice that... Oh, and I think the thing is not really how much Liv wants to be in the movie... It's how much they pay her... I bet a lot more than some unknown actor who says three lines...

Mae Governnen! There are other fans!? Wow! I'm not alone!

I kinda like Lord of the Rings mroe than Harry Potter. To tell you the truth, I ditched Harry Potter for Lord of the Rings, and I scarcly care for Harry Potter. I oticed Harry Potter is almost like a cheap scam of Lord of the Rings.

I'm sorry if I offen anyone with this. Please ignore me.

I've read LotR the first time when I was 8 or 9... my brother made me... and I'm a really big fan since then. I love the movies, too, but I try not to combine with the books too much - the books are just too great to be made in three films... but I see the movies more like based on the books and then it's ok. The only thing I got to complain about is Liv Tyler: I hate her! Arwen is in the books the most beautiful woman in the whole world - maybe except Galadriel - and this Tyler-woman looks soooo stupid! And I don't like it that she is so much in the movies and there's nothing about the story between Faramir and Eowyn... A question to the people who haven't read the books: do you understand all in the movies? I don't know if I would've... And have any of you read the Simarillion? I tried but it was too hard... but I think I will try again...

O you noticed her masculine features as well did you Trish? I figured they would have picked someone who looked so much more feminine and , well someone prettier. No offense to anyone that thinks she is pretty.

As for Harry Potter being copies of Lord of the Rings, I have to say I fail to see that many similarities. The style of the books is different, the social structures and societies are different. Lord of the Rings is more of a war type story where there is always a fight being conducted. I don't mean like smaller battles as seen in Harry Potter but more of huge battles involving thousands of people. You see those battles constantly throughout the books where as in Harry Potter you don't.

Granted they do have some things in common, creature use mostly, but I hardly think it grants saying that one is a copy of the other.

In my opinion though, Lord of the Rings is not really a better story but more of an epic tale. It was meant for an older audience and therefore makes it more of a challenge to read.

Well, mayby not an older audience, in my point of view... I think HP is easier to understand for kids and people still read it no matter how old they are, so, I'd say the thing is that LotR is a little more limited... A kid finds it a lot harder to read than a HP book (at least the first three HP boks). The history is complex and written in a complex way, but I would't say it is more or less interesting than HP even for older audience...

About Liv, I haven't noticed what you said... Why do you think she's not quite feminin?

When JK wrote the books, she was aiming for an audience of children, hence the fact that they are children books. It does not mean that adults can not read it. When Tolkein wrote Lord of the Rings, he was aiming at an older audience. Hence the more complex and drawn out parts of the book. The stories were both directed at different age groups. Having a book written for and so younger children can read it does not mean that adults are not allowed to read it. I did not say that. Nor did I say that LotR is impossible to read for a child. A lot of younger kids read it. The reason it is harder for them to understand is because it was not written for there particular reading level.

As for Liv, it really is just my opinion, but her face just doesn't have what it takes for the "elven princess" type. Her shoulders are fairly wide and her whole body shape is set different then the more "feminine" of girls.

I was a Rowling fan to start. Then I read the Lord of the Rings books, Hobbit, Simarillion, and other refrence books.

I still don't understand movie fans, though. Good movies, but they mess up Tolkien.

Well look at me go; abandoning my topic? I apologize!

It's amazing to see so many LOTR fans. In participating avidly in the LOTR fandom, I have come to see how many fans dabble in other fandoms. LOTR fans in particular seem to have an affinity for HP. They also tend toward anime, Buffy, PotC, and other such fandoms.

My explanation for the similarities between Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings is this: they are both fantasy novels. Not saying that all fantasy novels have similarities, but many and most fantasy-based books feature a troubled or "lost" protagonist. Fantasy also features many of the medieval or ancient legends. Elves, dragons, spectral dark-robed beings, shape-shifters and the like have always been a common in legend, myth and fantasy. Many fantasy authors look to the past to derive inspiration. JK has obviously done so in including dragons, chimaera, hippogriffs and mermaids (sirens). Tolkien did as well - halflings, dragons, elves and dwarves.

But see how differently they have each interpreted them. JK portrays elves as small, subservient, finite creatures with unique capabilities that include powerful magic of their own and the necessity of being set free by being presented with clothes. JRR's elves are tall, immortal, highly respected and revered, and wield deadly weapons with unsurpassed skill.

I think that the fact that Frodo and Harry were both raised by their uncles is simply amusing and a coincidence, unless of course JK was paying homage to LOTR, which is unlikely.

The dementors and the Nazgul, while strikingly similar, are recurrences of the dark figures in so many stories. The fact that they both end up serving the "Dark Lord" is just fantastic. Smile

LOTR and HP are such compatible fandoms, aren't they? ^_^
