As soon as we knew someone would die, and you start reading OotP, there's a sense of doom hanging over Sirius... all the rashness (eg of going to the station with Harry) and his bitterness at being cooped up, we can feel it building. I began worrying it was Sirius as soon as Arthur Weasley was attacked (because I had this hunch that the snake episode happened too early in the book; she wouldn't want to spend half of the book grieving for someone; the death had to happen in the last few chapters.) Carrying on the book when you're so worried for your beloved is so hard; you think if you stop, and just put the book down, maybe it'll be okay, he won't die because you didn't read it... If only I could have stopped myself maybe he'd still be here, but I couldn't, I had to know the whole truth, maybe he'd be okay, maybe, just maybe....
It's all my fault! I finished the book and sirius is... gone.

I didn't like the way he acted toward Harry. He kept saying stuff like " James would have done it. " or " James would have thought it would be fun". He kept trying to treat Harry as if Harry were James. I understand why he did it, I just didn't like it. I know he was trying to recapture what he had with James, but ,at some level, I don't think he realized that Harry wasn't James. That's just my opinion, though.

I of course loved Sirius in the fifth book! Actually, I'm at the moment re-reading the book as it was a couple of months ago published in my native language (Finnish).
He would have deserved more 'page time' (of course) but lets hope that happens in book 6 or 7

Sirius in the fifth book... I'm not sure how I feel about him. On one hand, I wanted him to just-- grow up. To accept things as they were and just stay put and stop taking his anger out on everyone else. (kinda sounds like someone else we know. *sideglances at Harry*) But, on the other, I can understand where he was coming from. After having been on the run for so long and now being trapped in a nightmare, he had a bad case of cabin fever. I still wish Rowling would have given him something to do rather then killing him off...but maybe recklessnes was something that wouldn't help in the second war against Moldywart. *shrug*

I think the 5th book was actually about Sirius only the main attention was on him and Harry kept imagining about him. It was to show that sirius is very important to Harry. Though Sirius was a bit gloomy in book 5 but still what can you do.

Sirius seemed desperate in the 5th book, he was desperate to get out of #12, he was desperate to make himself usefull, and he was desperate to have some fun. The depression turned me off, the only time I really liked him in book 5 was when he escorted Harry to the train station.
I think he would have been much better off at the burrow being Snuffles the dog, he could have had some freedom and fun, its not like the Weasleys get many death eaters up there, and no ministry officials knew he was an animagus, at least none that was likely to call on the Weasleys.
Poor Snuffles, he didn't have to die.

although he was irritable, tired of being confined to a house he hated and frustrated that he couldnt help out the order, i loved every mention of sirius in book five. i mean, he's the best character in the book! plus his relationship with harry grew, and we got a sneak peak of what he was like in his hogwarts days. what i didnt like was his death. i mean, there was no closure, no time to say goodbye, he goes from being in azkaban to being stuck at grimmald place to being bloody dead, and he never actually got to do anything useful. it seems like such a waste, harry's now lost his parents and the only father he ever knew, kinda makes saving him from the dementors kiss a waste of time doesnt it? i guess then we would have never gotten to know this really great character and book five wouldnt have meant as much. damn im babbling. oh and i noticed something... sirius lived at grimmauld place, and when harry first encounters sirius as a dog he thought him to be a grim..
it just seemed like when he became an animigus he was meant to be a dog. i know that has nothing to do with anything, but hey *shrugs*. wonder how it would effect sirius if he transformed into a dog behind the veil? if at all i mean. oh well i just want him to come back man!

Personally, I just cant let go.
Jk did mention about when she killed this character off she was so tempted to go back and change it- but she had to be tough, I took it like- He'll never come back. But the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like she meant it in a different way. That she actually meant because she'd been half killing characters eg- Arthur (the scare with the Boggart) , Hermione (with that purple spell). This was to be the one that didnt come back after a few seconds of confusion.
She kept on teasing us to really throw us off until she really slammed the dagger in our back with the half death or Sirius'. It was so different in the way that it was so half done ..... so incomplete - so that you held your breath waiting for something else to happen.... he was so unfinished. And death isnt unfinished! Thats why I cant accept it.
Luna mentioned something that really meant so much more than Harry thought of. Lunas character is deeper than Harry can see past .....
I have so much to say on this subject I cant even begin to explain.
Luna had 'lost her possesions', the things that were dear to her, 'people take them and hide them', death took Sirius from Harry, and he was just lurking out of sight behind the veil..... but it was the line 'They'll come back , they always do in the end' she mentions it twice..... it was something she really wanted to say.
For this reason and loads more I could bore you with I dont believe he is gone, Sirius was a fantastic character- he is the person you either love or loathe- but you certainly cant ignore him. He is everything you want in a friend and to deny Harry of someone who could be his father was cruel. True, he tried to treat Harry like he was James but this guy had one of his close friends betray and have murdered his best friend- he lost everything that night and then was put through hell by being falsely accused. ..... etc etc etc until finally getting Harry back at his house- Sirius needed a bit of escape from the prison that was Grimmauld Place and it was having fun with Harry, someone who reminded him of the good things in life- of the Potters, who treated him more like family than the Blacks. We see a whole range of emotions from Sirius which I find highly nessisary for someone who has been through as much as he has. I think Ive completely forgot about the plot of this thread ..... So I'll try and round it up- this reply is rather Ootp lengthed.
I think the thing that really got to my most though about Sirius ..... which surprisingly is not the fact he never truely tasted a freedom that other people knew he deserved ..... but the fact he never properly hugged Harry. I dont know why it bothers me that much ..... I always try and find a moment where it happens - and Im sure there is a 'brief, one armed hug' somewhere, but that was never enough for me. I wanted them to just break down together - becuase you know they felt the exact same pain and ...... Oh its all too much!
Sorry that this is so long- I just have so much to say about this wonderful wonderful man.

I totally agree with you! Sirius was not being himself in the fourht book, probably too worried about Harry to be feeling like his normal self. aw.
I liked him in the fifth book, it was soo easy to imagine him with James and the others.
I loved when he and Remus were talking to Harry in the fire and they were "beaming reminiscantly" i thought this was soo nice and touching. *sniff sniff*
I also couldn't help but smile at his last words before he....well you know! I thought it was one last show of our beloved Padfoot before he left! :wah

Sirius only proved he was innocent when the Death Eaters killed him, and when Voldemort showed up at the Ministry because of him and the others in the Order, the Ministry couldn't stop denying that he was back to life. Unless he died the Death Eaters would still have the advantage.
Also, Dumbledore says the Unspeakables study death in that room so maybe they'll figure out how to bring people back. His body never comes through the other end when he falls through the veil, so he's still got his body even if he's in the afterlife... maybe he's not even dead?

I loved that Sirius had some more page time in this one even if it wasn't the happiest times. As many have said he always seemed oppressed by the house, and others, especially Snape. *scouls at thought of*
